The Current Problem.

UK Aquaculture is essential for our food security, with production expected to double in the next two decades. The UK shellfish industry employs over 3,000 people generating a revenue £40 M+ per year. Scottish sales of shellfish increased 6% to £10.4m 2021-2022.

The global shellfish industry is vulnerable to problems caused by climate change and in particular risks the impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on shellfish quality. If undetected HABs have the potential to cause significant public health and economic risks to industry. To mitigate these risks, UK food regulators (mirrored in a growing number of countries worldwide) now demand that landed shellfish are tested for the presence of HAB toxins before they reach our shops or restaurants.

Sourcing simple, cost-competitive and accurate tests for HAB toxins (cyanotoxins), which can on occasion contaminate filter-feeding shellfish, is a major challenge faced by shellfish growers and producers.

Rivers, Lakes and Domestic Water Supplies

Using the same scientific rigour the teams have development sister tests that are able to detect the presence of fresh water cyanotoxins in domestic water supplies, rivers and lakes.  The media constantly report the problems of algal blooms in some of our key waterways (exacerbated by climate change and sewage outflows). The toxin/antibody platform has now generated equivalent simple, rapid and cost-effective fresh water cyanotoxin LFTs for water quality monitoring and contamination identification.

Excellence Combined.

IgAquatics combines the expertise of two international centres of research excellence; Cyanosol Group (Robert Gordons University) and their toxin chemistry & the Scottish Biologics Facility (University of Aberdeen) with their diagnostic antibody expertise to develop and deploy simple, rapid and cost-effective, lateral flow tests (LFTs) for the detection of cyanotoxins in shellfish. (think COVID tests for shellfish)

Key Benefits.

Our next generation LFTs will support industry in fulfilling their regulated end product testing requirements mitigating the risk of release of contaminated products, saving the industry money and the reputational damage of product recalls.

Rigorously Tested.

Our tests have been developed using the very latest diagnostic/detection technologies and have been validated following rigorous analytical testing in CEFAS (the organisation responsible for “policing” shellfish testing for HAB toxins).
